HU fashion show 12

Her Universe brought geeky haute couture to San Diego Comic-Con last night with its first ever fashion show. Hosted at a room in the Hyatt by Her Universe, Hot Topic, and Nerdist, the event showcased work from both amateur and professional designers and took a moment to show off new items in the Her Universe collection – including a peek at apparel from their Studio Ghibli partnership.

The designers entered a contest online with a chance to participate in the fashion show and win the opportunity to work with Her Universe and Hot Topic to design a line of geek chic apparel. There were 36 designers, and they didn’t kid around. There were dresses and ensembles based on characters such as Marty McFly, Doctor Doom, Death, Kara Thrace, Loki, and so many more. Some outfits incorporated LEDs and impressive transformations, and more than a few of them included dangerous looking high heels. I was floored by the creativity on display.

There were a dazzling array of haute couture designs, and it was lovely to see geek apparel get fashion week treatment. I’ve never been to a show like this, but the runway and sea of blinking flashes from cameras looked just like what I’ve seen on television. I think these designs were much cooler than most (with the possible exception of the Rodarte Star Wars dresses).

The Evil Queen and Marty McFly took home top prizes. Designer Andrew MacLaine created a look based on Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time. The dress changed from an everyday look to a stunning black ensemble. The transformation made the crowd go wild. Amy Beth Christenson came up with a rocking design that captured the essence of Back to the Future; it looked futuristic and awesome – the crowd oohed and aahed when the ensemble made its entrance onto the runway.

See several hot looks from the runway after the break.
