We wrote previously about Disney’s redesign of Brave’s Merida for her inclusion into the Disney Princesses and the resulting negative reaction.
Well, a Disney rep has responded to clarify their plans for Merida and her “makeover”. Speaking with the LA Times, the rep notes:
The modified Merida was created specifically to welcome the character into the company’s princess collection. And according to a Disney representative on Wednesday, the image of Merida that sparked this maelstrom is part of a limited run of products including backpacks and pajamas. But images of the original Merida will also be available on consumer products, the Disney representative said.
I don’t know if this is a slow walk back or their way of having their cake and eating it too, but we know that they’re hearing the chorus of people who are definitely not feeling happy about the House of Mouse.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this for you.
