Chris and Madeleine Ball created a t-shirt which incorporates an Arduino Lilypad, Bluetooth dongle, and an Android phone to send the number of unread emails in their inbox to the shirt, which will show up as illuminated LEDs via conductive threads. The shirt has 7 LEDs and can display up to 127 new messages. For most of us, 126 of those will be spam.
If you want to try and make one of your own, check out the project page to obtain the source code that runs on the Lilypad and the python script.
Besides looking like the focus of an Indiana Jones / Mummy type movie or a Roomba that you can wear around your neck, the Escape C is also a wireless device that allows you to stream audio from Bluetooth compatible devices like your MP3 player or phone. Since it can connect to your device within 33ft, you can listen to music or accept calls while freeing up valuable hand real estate in your pockets. Look for the Escape C to be released later this year for $150-$180.
Being an avid Twitter enthusiast means tweeting about every breath and every bowel movement like they’re matters of global importance. Now the time has come to have your sneakers tweet about every step, which these “rambler” concept shoes can actually do. The product page states:
Rambler are a pair of sneakers that use the Twitter platform to literally microblog every step you take. A sensor embedded under the sole detects when the wearer is walking. This information is sent via Bluetooth to a mobile phone that makes the postings on Twitter. When the sensor detects a certain amount of pressure, the word “step†is posted. For the other moments the “.†symbol is posted. Following these postings one can know if the wearer is walking or not and also predict his speed.
Although these sneakers were actually created to mock Twitter insanity, they also have the potential to give many a powerful tool to annoy the hell out of people or further their sense of self-importance… Scary?
When future generations perform archaeological digs to gain knowledge of 21st century mankind, those who were tech nerds or simply well connected to the primitive ancient world will surely be identified by these strange connectivity symbols which accompany stashes of Bluetooth, Infared & USB compatible devices. The other giveaway will be evidence of severe arthritis in both thumbs, identifying those among us who were master text messengers.
