Nike finally made the Mags with Power Laces from Back To The Future II a reality yesterday, and Michael J. Fox made a memorable appearance on Kimmel last night to show them off.
He also confirmed that additional pairs of the shoes would be made and auctioned off in the Spring of 2016 with the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. This follows a similar (and highly successful) auction of non-functional Nike Mags auctioned off in 2011.
Of course, snagging a pair at auction will be out of the financial reach of most fans, but worry not. Nike has revealed that the BTTF Mags are “just the first iteration”:
This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.
Nike continues to test this technology across multiple sports, incorporating feedback into future game-changing footwear with unprecedented performance features that have the potential to impact athletes around the world.
So it would seem that Power Lace technology will be incorporated into other Nike shoes in the near future.
In the meantime you can check out Michael J. Fox demonstrating the shoes on Kimmel and Twitter after the break…
