The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) are responsible for the U.S. National Laboratory on the International Space Station. This year they teamed with Marvel to make an official mission patch that stars Groot and Rocket Raccoon.
Honestly, I’m not surprised. There’s a nerd or two working for NASA after all. In fact, I’ll be the other agencies are super jealous right now.
The patch was revealed at SDCC by CASIS rep Patrick O’Neill, who notes that the patch represents all of the scientific investigations on the station’s National Laboratory for 2016. From The Verge:
“These are characters who have a bit of a space-based background to begin with,” said O’Neill. “So both of [these] characters already embody some of the characteristics associated with what’s happening on the space station.”
