The new film adaptation of Stephen King’s IT starring Bill Skarsgård is definitely taking Pennywise in a more terrifying direction than the TV version Tim Curry scarred our collective childhood with.
This new image from Entertainment Weekly make it clear that you can forget bright colors and the Bozo familiarity. Mama director Andy Muschietti is giving us a Pennywise that draws inspiration from creepier clown fashions of yore, all faded to gray and shadow save for bursts of orange from his hair and pom poms and the blood red on his face.
All of these design choices were made by Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant (Deadwood, Mad Men) and the end result is a Pennywise that’s sure to scare the crap out of you, no matter how old you are. Check out the entire costume below.
