Man Dressed As Darth Vader Ran a Death Valley Mile In 129 Degree Heat

Vader Death Valley 1

It’s been ridiculously warm on the West coast over the past week. Temperatures have pushed towards record highs, and you can feel the intense heat most of all in Death Valley. Most of us hide indoors with our air conditioning or flock to the beach in such weather, but not Jonathan Rice. He donned a Darth Vader suit and took a mile run through the blazing national park last Sunday while the temperature was at a steamy 129 degrees Fahrenheit.

He started heat running in 1996 and added the Vader attire three years ago. It’s developed into the Darth Valley Challenge and other runners and fans show up in Star Wars costumes. It’s a nutty hobby and dangerous, but Rice is hoping this sprint puts him in the Guinness Book of World Records for the hottest verified run. Interestingly, it’s also the craziest verified run.
