The Boy Scouts of America added a new merit badge to their line up recently. They shared the news at SXSW that Scouts can now earn a Game Design badge. They hope this will foster curiosity about technology and encourage Scouts to learn more.
It’s not just an excuse to go play on the Xbox though; they have to put in serious work to get the badge. They have to be able to design a game in any medium – tabletop or video – and keep a notebook for the project. Additionally they have to understand the importance of play value, objectives, and themes in other games as well as understand the tangle of intellectual property and gaming. Whew.
I foresee many Kickstarter projects for the games the Scouts will design.
